JOSE QUINTANA CAN'T BE UNDERRATED

This is silly, I know, but if you'll indulge me.

Last week I saw an article from Sports on Earth about baseball's all-underrated team. Not surprisingly, Jose Quintana was featured on the team. This is because any time somebody mentions Jose Quintana they mention how underrated he is.

And that's just idiotic.

By definition, if you keep mentioning Jose Quintana as somebody who is underrated, he cannot be underrated. You're rating him. Everybody is rating him. He is perfectly rated!

Jose Quintana is good. White Sox fans have known this for a few years, and recently national media folks have begun to figure it out as well. This is why he's being considered underrated.

But he's not. You're just late to the party.

In his three seasons with the White Sox he's been worth 11.4 WAR. In that same time span Chris Sale's been worth 19.4 WAR, Justin Verlander 13.5 WAR, Max Scherzer 16.9 and James Shields 10.1.

So we know what he's worth. He's better than most starters, even if he's not on that elite level. If anything, based on his WAR comparisons to James Shields, he's not underrated, he's underpaid. Shields is probably going to sign a $100 million contract any day now while Quintana will make $24.65 million over the next six years (ALL PRAISE BE TO RICK HAHN).

But, again, when this happens....

...he can no longer be considered underrated. Thanks.
